The uncomfortable truth is that a lot of people will straight up lie just to “improve the image” of Linux. I’ve been using Linux for about 8 years now and I wouldn’t say that “it’s perfect now” or “everything just works”. No. Absolutely not. I play a lot of co-op games with friends and there are issues all the time. EA launcher taking YEARS to start, so my friend starts the game and waits, waits, waits… for me. Sometimes in-game audio decides to just stop working and I have to restart the game. And don’t even get me started on the fear “if I alt-tab right now, will the game work? will it crash? will i get a black screen when I go back?”. There are issues, nitpicks, bugs. The experience is the absolute opposite of “just works”. And this comes from someone who absolutely loves open source software and Linux. There was a time where I did a lot of that “Linux shilling” too. I recommended Linux to everyone, asked my friends if they wanted to switch, told them that it’s absolutely fine nowaydays. But I stopped, because I realized that it’s a lie. I know they’d be going through the same issues that I have, and more. And if you’re not an actual Linux enthusiast that cares about the stuff that Linux stands for, you won’t be happy with it.

If you have issue with Bottles, you don’t immediately go to the Wine bug tracker. If you have issue with packaged Bottles, you immediately go to the Bottles bug tracker. There is clearly a big difference.

If you put yourself in the developers’ position, it’s actually understandable. Distributions ship Bottles package filled with issues or straight up borked, users turn their frustrations to the Bottles developers instead of package maintainers, devs get frustrated and bombarded with issues that they can’t fixed. A ton of time, effort and mental health is wasted. I think the wishes of devs should be respected, even though the software is open source and you CAN package it however you’d like.

The creator and maintainer of openSUSE Aeon leans towards support of the decision, as he says “package maintaners can do whatever they want”.

It’s quite ironic that for a lot of people “destroying twitter” means spending half a day there, finding rage-inducing tweets and sharing them on other social media sites just so they can enjoy the free traffic and engagement. It would be nice if we could, you know, ignore it and let it die.

Of course, I was comparing it to other “standalone” window managers, not the ones used by GNOME/KDE, since the userbase will be obviously much higher for the desktop environments.

I’m amazed by the amount of work being done by Hyprland devs. I remember how they were just starting not that long ago, and now it’s (probably) the most popular Wayland window manager.

If you actually dig deeper into the Linux security topic, you’d find out that Linux is actually not very secure. GrapheneOS developers made quite a lot of posts on what Linux distros (and the kernel) are missing in terms of security. A lot of “Linux security and the lack of viruses” rides on the waves of “there is hardly any point of creating malware for a system with such a small user base, plus you have to consider the fact that people knowledgeable enough just to install a Linux distro would be a bit more careful about their computers than the average Joe”.

My friend just got a new Xiaomi phone. He tried unlocking it a few days ago and got “try again in 168 hours”. That happened in Europe. It’s an absolute mess nowadays, I remember when they started blocking you from unlocking the bootloader. First you had to wait 24 hours, then 3 days, now it’s an entire week. You also need to make sure you’re logged into your Mi Account on both phone and PC and do even more weird fuckery to ensure the process actually go through. Meanwhile, on GOOGLE Pixel devices you just type one command after you enable oem unlocking in settings and reboot into fastboot mode. Crazy.

Yeah. As much as I love GrapheneOS and all the security work, sometimes I feel like their “ideal” setup is to just install GrapheneOS on the latest Pixel phone and use only the 5 or so built in apps, as everything else is insecure, brings additional code baggage and can introduce flaws. I don’t think anyone can live like that.

It’s actually a lot faster now with dnf5 in Fedora 41.

You don’t need to type apt-get, you can just do apt upgrade.

It’s not ready for everyday users when you disable basic multimedia codecs. I know it’s a US patent issue but still, you can’t expect newcomers and everyday users to just “install a browser via flatpak instead” or “just get your mesa and ffmpeg from this third party repo”
