Thankfully all the instances we’re on block heavily but there are some well known bad actors who are white supremacists and a lot of reply guys, JAQ etc people too, I’ve seen quite a few who have slipped through the cracks before.

Yeah, if your instances doesn’t discuss politics and you don’t follow anyone outside of music circles or at least don’t open anything with a political CW you likely won’t ever see it, but it’s there.

So is Mastodon really, well not a site but yeah, a lot of users there are ex 4-channers or still use it and it shows.

Fedi isn’t really any better.

Well, good news the newest update to Freetube now adds 4K+ support since they changed the library used to get the videos or something. I have tested it and the video says 4K and seems to be that. Feel free to correct me if you try the latest update and find any discrepancies.

Which version of Newpipe are you using? You’ll want to use their latest release repository rather than the ‘stable’ one, that seems to make it work.

XMPP is not viable imo because of its approach to ‘standards’ and XEPs and that its e2ee is not always on and can be turned off, not to mention not necessarily not all that good encryption to begin with since most clients still use the old versions of OMEMO and the other methods of e2ee for it don’t (yet) have PFS.

How so and what ‘mass market’ messengers are there that could replace them?

I have scoured and tried many messengers and most of them are just plain either not there yet or never will be.

The only one that is actually private and good I have come across is Signal and it doesn’t seem like it is either “run into the ground” nor does it “need replacing”.

I just don’t see anything else becoming ‘mass market’ as most of them are too niche or are developed only for tech obsessives and paranoid folks, with either not always on e2ee or suspect business practices or just not on all platforms or never will be.
